Description

The most common fibre used in thread making is polyester / Dacron, this is the thread of choice for sail and cover makers. They are UV resistant and some options include an anti-wick treatment which means the thread has a lubricant that repels water and keeps the water from travelling down the thread and into the needle hole. The helps to keep the water from seeping through. The most important factor in keeping water from seeping through the holes in using the correct size needle with the correct thread. Overly large needles will create holes that an anti-wick finish cannot stop water from penetrating the hole.

ANTI-WICK FINISH

Serabond is an anti-wick polyester thread.

This finish helps the thread repel water. It prevents “weeping” seams and is resistant to mildew. It’s also resistant to salt water damage.

WEATHER RESISTANT

Hohenstein Laboratories have examined Serabond’s durability with a weathering test: Through modern processing technologies and the usage of special dyestuffs, both maximum tensile force and colour fastness remain on a high level, even after 300 hours of testing.

RESISTANT TO UV

Polyester is known for its strength, durability, and low shrinkage and stretch. It is the most common thread for outdoor applications. Over nylon threads, polyester thread has superior resistance to UV rays and moisture but much of its strength is lost after prolonged exposure to sunlight.
