Early Autumn/Late Summer; our favourite time of year has arrived. Now that the children are back at school this time of year brings some mixed weather, bit of sun, bit of wind, bit of rain and some pleasant days out on the water. It’s also Southampton Boat Show time, and here at C&J we normally take a moment to reflect on the past 9 months and start looking towards the next 3 to 6 months.

We had some real extremes of weather this year; Beast from the East, mini Beast from the East, a few weeks of rain and then Bam!….straight into the best/worst heatwave we’ve had for at least 40 years! Wow, was it hot at times.

We really love exhibiting at the Southampton Boat Show and there’s no better feeling when customers go out of their way to tell us that “the Bimini we made for them was a godsend”, or “the Enclosure was the best item they have purchased for the boat”. It’s a real buzz to hear such great comments. This is why we do what we do.

Here at C&J we have always tried to live by the motto ‘One Season Ahead’. i.e. we are now looking at the Autumn and Winter months; and what if we experience another significant weather event? Could be another Beast, or month after month of Atlantic storms battering our coastlines. What will this mean to protecting your pride and joy.

We are already taking enquiries for full bespoke Winter Covers, which is great; but these behemoths can sometimes take a minimum of 8 weeks to manufacture, depending on our workload and working patterns. Cockpit Enclosures and Tonneau covers also spike in demand during the Autumn months. Designs already on file can be turned around quite quickly, but bespokes or custom makes can take longer.

With one eye on the Brexit situation in the New Year (wish we had a crystal ball); now is the best time to make those preparations. Contact us now if you are thinking about protection over the Autumn and Winter months. Don’t leave it too late and let the weather get the better of you, whatever it might be.

2018 , weather

Although the Met Office are asking us to be aware over the coming few days, the unpredictability of our weather and some unusual weather events over the past few years, (remember the ‘significant snow event’ of 2010), means we must be on our toes when protecting our valuable boats and equipment.

Colder weather for the next few days

Be prepared! C&J Marine suggests that our customers need to………..

Make sure that any loose covers are tensioned correctly. Ensure that any lines, straps, shockcords, fittings etc are up to the job and replaced if necessary. It won’t take too much snow and ice to find the weak spots, exposing your sail, cockpit, teak decking or timber work to the harsh, damaging elements of winter. Prepare now, don’t leave it too late.

If you’re thinking about leaving your sails on for the winter, don’t!.  Remove them and bring them in to us for a valet and storage. If sails are left on, they may not be there when you get the chance to visit your boat again; well bits of them may be still attached to the forestay and boom, if you’re lucky!

Protect! If you haven’t got any covers on your sails, or your cockpit or timberwork is open to the elements. Act now! We still have time to supply Cockpit Enclosures, Cockpit Tonneau’s, Overall Winter Covers, Sail and Hatch covers before the possible extreme Winter weather sets in.

Sails and Covers cost a lot of money, a little effort and preparation now will protect your investment over the next few months and from whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at us. They will be ready for you again to use in the Spring.

If you can’t get down to your boat for a while, call us! We will be able to help. We regularly visit most marinas and boatyards in the Solent area and can visit your boat, tighten a few things up, make sure your sails and covers are secured, even remove the sails for you and store them in our workshop.*

*Charges will apply for these services. Prices are dependent on the type of work being undertaken. Estimates can be given prior to work commencing.
